About the Institute
Advanced options when traditional treatment hasn't been enough
For some people, traditional medications and psychotherapy provide meaningful relief. For others, symptoms persist despite multiple treatment attempts. Interventional psychiatry offers additional treatment options that use targeted, evidence-based approaches to address symptoms through mechanisms that differ from standard daily psychiatric medications.
Our goal is to provide thoughtful access to advanced psychiatric treatments in a comfortable, supportive, and medically supervised environment.
Interventional psychiatry is not simply about choosing between TMS, SPRAVATO, or ketamine. It begins with understanding you — your symptoms, diagnoses, previous medication trials, psychotherapy history, prior treatments, medical conditions, and treatment goals.

Clinical Perspective
When should interventional treatment enter the care plan?
Interventional Psychiatry Services
Three evidence-based pathways
Northern Lights Psychiatry offers several options for treatment-resistant depression. These treatments work differently and have different eligibility, scheduling, cost, and insurance-coverage considerations. A consultation helps determine which option may be most appropriate for you.
NeuroStar® TMS
FDA-cleared. Non-invasive. No anesthesia.
- No anesthesia or sedation required
- Patients remain awake throughout each session
- Outpatient — no hospitalization or recovery time
- Covered by most major insurance plans when criteria are met
- Individually evaluated for appropriateness
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive treatment that uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. TMS does not require anesthesia or sedation, and patients remain awake throughout treatment. Treatment is provided as a series of outpatient sessions, with the specific protocol determined by diagnosis, clinical history, and individual treatment needs.

FDA-approved. Rapid-acting. In-office monitoring.
- FDA-approved for treatment-resistant depression and MDD with suicidal ideation
- Self-administered nasal spray under clinical supervision
- 2-hour monitored observation period per session
- Covered by many insurance plans including Medicare
- Administered in our certified REMS-compliant setting
SPRAVATO® (esketamine) is an FDA-approved prescription nasal spray administered in a certified healthcare setting for eligible adults with certain forms of depression. Patients receive SPRAVATO under medical supervision and remain at the clinic for monitoring after administration. Our treatment environment is designed to provide privacy and comfort throughout the required observation period. Treatment frequency and duration are individualized according to clinical response, tolerability, FDA-approved prescribing information, and the patient's overall treatment plan.

IM & IV. Medically supervised. Individualized.
- Intramuscular (IM) and intravenous (IV) protocols available
- Individualized evaluation required for every patient
- Medically supervised with vital-sign monitoring
- Six-session induction programs available
- CareCredit financing available
The Northern Lights Mood Institute offers ketamine injections and infusions as part of our interventional psychiatry services for appropriately selected patients. Ketamine works differently from many conventional psychiatric medications and may be considered in certain clinical circumstances when symptoms have remained difficult to treat. Because ketamine treatment for psychiatric conditions may involve off-label use, every patient receives an individualized evaluation to review potential benefits, risks, alternatives, medical considerations, and whether treatment is clinically appropriate.

Depression often does not occur alone
Individuals living with persistent or treatment-resistant depression may also experience symptoms associated with anxiety, OCD, trauma, and other co-occurring conditions. Our approach considers the whole clinical picture rather than focusing exclusively on a single diagnosis or symptom.
When beneficial, we collaborate with your existing psychiatrist, therapist, primary care clinician, and other members of your healthcare team. Patients may continue receiving their routine psychiatric care from their established providers while coming to the Mood Institute specifically for interventional treatment.
Co-occurring conditions we consider
Eligibility for specific treatments varies by diagnosis, medical history, and other clinical factors. A thorough evaluation determines which options may be appropriate for each patient.
